Winchester, Virginia - On Friday May 9th 2008 Millbrook held the Last Chance Invitational where teams from all over the district competed for their final shot to enter districts. Once again, the looming weather threatened the meet, but thankfully it held off. Millbrook, Handley, James Wood, Warren County, Skyline, and Sherando all represented the Northwestern District. Although Heritage High School stole the meet in the girls division, Sherando placed second with 61.5 points and Millbrook coming in at fourth with 46 points. However in the boys division the tides were turned when Millbrook tied for first with Turner Ashby High School with 93 points and Sherando coming in third with 62 points. In both the 100 and 200-meter dash Skyline’s Jasmine Burill took third place with times of 13.30 (100 meter) and 27.05 (200 meter). The girls 800 Meter Run Millbrook’s Tammy Cheung took first place with a time of 2:24.71 while James Woods’ Rachel Carson took a close second with a time of 2:24.86. Both girls fell just shy of the time needed to qualify for state competition. Handley’s Clair Brideforth qualified for state competition when she took first place in the girl’s 1600 Meter Run with a time off 5:17.18. Millbrook's Sullivan Parks also qualified for state competition with her second place finish (5:18.30). During the girls 3200 Meter Run Mara Smith from Warren County came in first place with a time off 11:50.89. The Northwestern District really shined during the girl’s high jump when Lauren Carter (Sherando) came in second followed closely by Melyssa Robinson (Millbrook), with Caroline Crowe (Handley) and Schavon Hinds (Millbrook) tying for fourth. The Northwestern district also showed their skills in the girl’s discus throw where Ashley Rassmussmen from Skyline won first place with a throw of 103-01 feet. Sherando’s Maddy Morris came in second with a throw of 96-07 feet, while James Wood’s Courtney Magaw came in third fourth 92-09 feet. Meanwhile in the boys 100 Meter Dash, Brenton Parham (Millbrook) won first place with his time of 11.39. He also took second place in the 200 Meter Dash with a time of 22.56. Millbrook continued their streak by winning the 800 Meter Run thanks to Stephen Lassiter. During the 1600 Meter Run Sean Whitson (Sherando) had a solid first place finish with a time of 4:30.60, which qualified him for state competition in this event. James Wood’s Aaron Stiles who was clocked at 4:33.08 followed him closely. One of the most exciting races of the evening was the 3200 Meter Run where Sherando’s Danny Stiefyater and Colby Witt came in right behind each other winning both first and second place with times of 9:45.61 (Danny) and 9:48.30 (Colby). Both of these Sherando atheletes qualified for state competition in this event.
