Championship

May 21, 2008, Leesburg, VA - The Region II Championships concluded today at Heritage High School, with a number of notable
performances from athletes in the Northwestern District. The Region II Championships aren't always a benchmark for how things
will likely turn out at the State Championship. This is because many athletes who have already qualified for state competition for
certain events may not compete in those events at the Region Championship. That being said, the Northwestern District was well
represented.
Skyline High School's Jazzy Burill continued her fantastic season by placing second in the girls long jump - 16'08". Three girls in
the Northwestern District placed 4th, 5th and 6th - Sherando's Carolyn Thiel was 4th (33'07"), Skyline freshman Lindsey
Toothman was 5th (33'03") and Sherando's Lauren Wilkins placed 6th (33'02"). Brentsville's Danyelle Kent Robinson lead
the district in the high jump, placing 2nd (5'4"). Sherando's Lauren Carten placed 5th (5'02").
Brentsville's Mariama Bello lead the district in both the discus and shot throwing competition. Bello placed 3rd in the Shot (35'01"),
with Skyline's Ashley Rassmussen placing 4th (33'09") and Tootie Jackson, also from Skyline HS placing 5th (33'09).
Bello placed 4th in the discus (108'03).
Millbrook's Schavon Hinds continued her trend of outstanding hurdle performances, placing first in the 100 meter hurdles (14.97) and
2nd in the 300 meter hurdles (47.81). Skyline's Jazzy Burill placed 4th in the girls 100 meter dash, with a time of (12.84).
Sherando's Megan Hunt finished 4th in the 400 meter dash (101.68).
James Wood's Rachel Carson had an outstanding day today - placing 3rd in the 800 (2:23.18) and 6th in the 1600 (5:17). If
my memory serves me correctly, this should be another PR for Carson in the 1600. The 1600 was a fast race - girls from the
Northwestern District placed 2nd through 7th, and they were all very close times. Brentsville's Maggie Gentry placed 2nd, with an
impressive time of 5:11. Handley's Clair Bridgeforth finished right behind Gentry, placing 3rd (5:12). Gentry's teammate Allison
Bartels placed 4th (5:15) and Warren County's Mara Smith placed 5th, (5:15.95). Millbrook's Sullivan Parkes was 7th in
the 1600. Brentsville's Maggie Gentry has a reputation for being a top notched competitor, however Clair Bridgeforth seems
to have emerged as one of the state's top distance runners.
The girls 3200 saw three competitors from the district placing 1, 2, 3. Maggie Gentry placed first (11:25), with teammate Allison
Bartels placing 2nd (11:34) and Warren County's Mara Smith placing 3rd (11:41). These girls should be commended
for placing so well running both the 1600 and 3200 in the same day.
The jumping competition was fairly quiet, as far as NW District athletes go. James Wood's Mason Smith finished 5th in the
high jump - 5'10". Skyline's AJ Jackson placed 6th in the triple jump - 41'07".
The NW District has TWO Region II Champions in the throwing events. Sherando's Joey Christine finished first in the shot - 47'10".
James Wood's Brian Ingram finished right behind Christine, placing 2nd in the shot - 46'10". The discus throwing competition wasn't
very close. Warren County's Rueben Shanks finished first with a throw of 150'.00. Brentsville's Brian Baker placed 4th (129'11").
Brentsville's Andre Wanzer had two stellar performances, placing first in both the 200 meter dash and the 400 meter dash.
Millbrook's Brenton Parham had a solid 5th place finish in the 100 meter hurdles (15.26). Parhams teammate Brad Beauregard
placed 6th in the same event (15.65).
Brentsville's Ray Delgado placed third in the 800, with a time of 2:04. Millbrook's Stephen Lassiter placed 4th in the 1600 (4:28),
and teammate Bobby Vance placed 6th in the 1600 (4:31). Brenton Parham placed 3rd in the 3200 (40:61).
Millbrook HS had two relay teams that placed well at the regional championship today. They placed first in the 4 x 400 - 3:25.
The Millbrook boys relay team placed 2nd in the 4 x 800, with a time of 8:14.
