April 26, 2008, Winchester, VA - This weekend James Wood High School hosted the highly anticipated Apple Blossom Invitational and despite the foreshadowing weather conditions most of the events went unhindered. This year teams such as Skyline, Warren County, James Wood, Handley, Millbrook, and Sherando proudly represented the Northwestern District. While the overall winners of the meet included Loudoun Valley for the girl’s side and Broad Run for the boys, Millbrook once again lead the district by coming in third on both rankings. In the girls 400 Meter Dash Sherando junior Megan Hunt took 2nd place with a time of 1: 01.4. Meanwhile in the girls 1600 Meter Run turned out to be an exciting race, with James Wood’s Rachel Carson running a state qualifying time of 5:19.0 and a second place finish. Carson wasn’t the only athlete who had a great race in this event; Warren County’s Mara Smith finished right behind her, and also qualified for the state championship with a time of 5:19.8. Millbrook’s Sullivan Parks finished fourth with a time of 5:20.5. Millbrook continued to do well during the girl’s 100 Meter Hurdles with Schavon Hinds taking first place (5’.00”). Schavon also placed first in the girl’s high jump, while Sherando’s Lauren Carter came in second. During the girl’s Long Jump Skylines Jasmine Burill stomped the competion when she came in first place with a jump of 17-02.00. Sherando and Millbrook also placed in the top 10 for this event. Skyline also did well in the girls Discus Throw with Ashley Rassmussen taking second place to Park View’s Natalie Baird, who set a meet record with her throw of 150-09 feet. As for the boys they too had a great meet. For instance, Millbrook’s Brenton Parham took second place in the boy’s long jump (20.03) tacking on 8 more points to Millbrook’s already impressive score. The Sherando boys also shined especially in the shot put where they placed second thanks to Joey Christine (48.05). In the Discus Throw Handley’s Josh Bickert and Warren County’s Reuben Shanks both did well placing second (Handley 148’08”) and third (Warren County 143’00”). As for the running events Sherando placed third in the boys 100 Meter Dash while Warren County followed right behind with a place of fourth. In the 400 Meter Dash James Wood came in third, Skyline fourth with Handley and Warren County tied for seventh. Then in the 1600 Meter Run Millbrook’s Stephen Lassiter took first with a time of 4:26.9 while his teammate Bobby Vance took third, and Sherando’s Danny Stiefvater coming in at fourth.
