April 20, 2008 - Winchester, Virginia - The first big invitational track and field meet this season produced a number of state and regional qualifiers for the six Northwestern District Teams that competed in the 68th Handley Invitational yesterday. Sixteen teams competed at Handley High School, with Handley, Sherando, Millbrook, James Wood, Skyline and Warren County representing the Northwestern District. Heritage and Stone Bridge high schools dominated the team competition, with both schools tied for first place on the girls side. Stone Bridge easily won the boys team competition. Millbrook’s boys placed third as a team, and that was the closest any of the district teams came to first place. Relays The Millbrook and James Wood boys finished first and second in the 4 x 800 meter relay, qualifying both teams to state competition for this event. Sherando’s boys finished third, and qualified for regional competition. Sherando’s girls finished third in the 4 x 800. Millbrook’s boys finished first in the 4 x 400, with a time of 3:27, and James Wood’s boys finished fourth in the same event. Throwers The big story of the day for the throwers was Warren County’s Rueben Shanks, who placed first in the boys discus throw. While he had an impressive throw of 145’ 8”, Rueben has his sights set on his school record of 171’. Sherando High School’s Joey Christine placed third in the discus (129’10”), and third in the shot (48’09.5”). James Wood’s Brian Ingram placed fourth in the shot, with a throw of 47’ 7”. On the girls side, Park View’s Natalie Baird dominated the throwing competitions, as everyone expects. Handley’s Rachel Lavender placed 6th in the Shot(32’08.5”), and Skyline’s Tootie Jackson placed 7th(31’10.5”). Skyline’s Ashley Rassmussen placed 7th in the discus, with a throw of 98’ 01”. Jumpers Sherando’s Lauren Carter cleared 5’02” to give her a second place finish and eight team points in the girls high jump. Millbrook’s Schavon Hinds placed fourth in the high jump (5’.00”). Sherando’s Carolyn Thiel placed fourth(33’02.25”) in the girls triple jump, and right behind her was Skyline’s Lindsey Toothman, who had a solid fifth place finish with a jump of 32’6.5”. Skyline’s Jasmine Burill placed 4th in the girls long jump (16’.0”) On the boys side, Millbrook’s Brenton Parham placed 5th (19’03.5”) in the boys long jump, and Warren County’s Japhth Chunn placed 6th (19’01”)in the long jump. Skyline’s AJ Jackson placed 7th in the triple jump (39’00”) Hurdles Shavon Hinds from Millbrook swept the girls 100 and 300 meter hurdle events placing first in each event. James Wood’s April Salyer had a 7th place finish in the 100 meter hurdles. Millbrooks Brenton Parham also had a big day, placing first in the 300 meter hurdles and 3rd in the 100 meter hurdles. Other notables were Roy Deschon from Millbrook, who placed 6th in the 300 meter hurdles with a time of 41:86. Sprints and Running Events Sherando High School’s Markeith Brisco had a solid third place finish in the 100 meter dash, and an 8th place finish in the 200. Teammate Kadeem Blackwood placed 6th in the 100, with a time of 11.76. Meanwhile, Handley’s Matt Gowdy placed third in the 400, with a time of 52.43. In the 800 meter run, Handley’s Clair Bridgeforth secured a top five finish, with a time of 2:25. Mara Smith (Warren County) claimed the top spot in the 1600, with a time of 5:22, a new PR for Mara. Milbrook’s Jenna Pickett finished 6th and Sherando’s Rachel Trip finished 7th. Sullivan Parkes won the 3200, with a time of 11:28. Handley’s Jeanette Mathieu placed 3rd in the 3200. On the boys side – Bobby Vance placed 2nd in the 800, with a time of 2:03, and James Wood’s Darin Longerbeam finished 6th (2:06). Stephen Lassiter from Millbrook secured a first place finish in the boys 1600, with a time of 4:25. James Wood’s Josh Wilson placed 4th (4:35), and Sherando’s Sean Whitson and Colby Witt finished 6th and 7th respectively. Sherando’s Danny Stiefvater dominated the boys 3200, finishing first with a time of 9:51. Other notables from within the Northwestern District include Warren County’s Adam Eakins who finished 5th (10:18), Handley’s Tom Delaney finished placed 6th (10:19) and Millbrook’s Jacob Leonardis finished 7th (10:20).
