September 9, 2006, Winchester, VA - The athletes at the 2006 James
Wood Invitational encountered a humid morning race, with teams from
Virginia and West Virginia competing on a hilly and muddy James Wood
course. In both races, the hills and humidity would take its toll
on more than one athlete. In the end, it was the James Wood
Girls and the Handley Boys who walked away with 1st place
wins.
In the
girl’s race,
Jillian Pollack of Millbrook High School took the lead early in the
first mile and was followed close behind by Handley’s Anna Cote and
Brooke Boening of Jefferson WV High School. As all three led the
pack of girls through the lower end of the course and around the
baseball field, the lead and the pace would soon change. After the
arduous “green house” hill, Cote assumed the lead and all three
pulled away from the pack of over 80 varsity girls. Clarke County’s
Sophia Holmes and Erin Broy would soon join the trio as they worked
the course together.

In the
end, it would be Brooke Boening of Jefferson High School crossing
the finish line first, with a commanding lead and a finishing time
of 20:36. Handley’s Anna Cote finished in second place (20:56) and
following seconds behind would be Clarke County’s duo of Sophia
Holmes (21:01) and Erin Broy (21:07). Millbrook’s Jillian Pollock
would take 5th place with a time of 21:12.
On the
team side, the lady Colonels of James Wood High School would leave
with the home trophy in hand. Wood was led by freshman Lauryl
Andrus who finished in 11th place with a time of 22:01,
12th place would go to sophomore Roni Frye (22:24), and freshman
Rachel Carson placed 15th with a time of 22:47. Senior
Lauren Pugh grabbed 18th place with a time of 23:08 and
Junior Claire McClellan took 19th place with a time of
23:18 which would seal the win for the lady Colonels. |

As the cards were
quickly tallied, James Wood Head Coach Mike Onda was jumping for
joy. “Our girls really preformed great today. I am very pleased to
see this kind of performance this early in the season.” Freshman
Lauryl Andrus took the first place win in stride. “I felt pretty
good today, so when I came around the soccer field, I took the lead
position for our team. This really feels great.”
In the
boy’s race,
Clarke
County’s Simon Biddle-Snead, Handley’s Clint Schiavone, Erin
McWhorter, and Daniel Carlton battled it out through the first mile
of the race and all four would approach the long green house hill
within seconds of each other. As in previous races, the hill would
change the pace.
The
lead would soon be taken over by Clarke’s Simon Biddle-Snead and he
gradually pulled away from the field capturing 1st place
with a time of 17:13. Handley’s Schiavone, McWhorter, and Carlton
crossed the line within 14 seconds of each other and would take the
2nd, 3rd, and 4th places
respectively. Clarke County’s Ben Veilleux took the 5th
spot. |

On the team side,
Handley High School and Clarke County would do battle the entire
race. In the end, the maroon and black from Handley High School
would dominate the day. Lead by Seniors Clint Schiavone in 2nd
place with a time of 17:30, Erin McWhorter in 3rd with a
time 17:37 and Daniel Carlton in 4th place with a time of
17:44, Handley set the stage for the race. Handley’s Cameron
Crowell snagged the 7th place card with a time of 17:57
and the victory would be sealed by junior Austin Cote (13th),
with a time of 18:16.
When spectators
looked towards the Handley coach’s corner, it was obvious who had
just won the team competition. Head boy’s coach Mark Stickley was
ecstatic. “I’m overjoyed! I knew that Clarke would be tough, but
we came here ready to run and we did what we had to do.” Senior
Clint Schiavone was equally thrilled with the win. ‘I knew the
course would be tough today, but I felt good. We came here and all
of us preformed really well.”
