2006 Track & Field Season Begins!
City/County Meet Summary

Winchester, VA, March 29 -- NWDistrict Staff  - Coming as early as it does on the schedule, the City/County meet can't expect too many stellar performances. But the competition is fierce regardless of the date.

Wednesday Millbrook hosted the Winchester City/Frederick County meet and easily won the girls' portion of the meet, almost doubling second-place Handley's team score. The boys meet came down the the wire with Sherando holding off the Judges by taking second in the 4x400 meter relay.
Millbrook's girls scored 100 points while Handley finished with 56. Sherando and James Wood finished in tie for third with 44. On the boys' side, Sherando tallied 81 points to Handley's 78. Wood finished with 42.5 while Millbrook totaled 42.

Individual performances for an early season meet were solid. Millbrook's Jillian Pollack won the 1600 (5:16.7) and the 800 (2:22.5) while also legging a relay split and scoring in the horizontal jumps. Overall, Millbrook's depth was the difference in the meet as they won four other events and scored points in almost every other one.

Sherando's Latasha Watson was a triple winner, taking the long jump (15-10), 400 (59.8) and 200 (26.0)  Her times on the track were particularly impressive for an early-season meet.

Handley's Ayla Smith was a double winner, taking both hurdle events. She clocked solid times of 15.3 and 47.8 in the 100 and 300 hurdles respectively.

On the boys' side, Ryan Witt lifted Sherando, kicking to wins in both the 1600 (4:39.7) and the 800 (2:01.7) and anchoring the 4x4 to keep the Warriors in front in the team battle. Teammate Terry Johnson had an impressive triple jump, bounding out to 44-7 for an easy win over Handley's Charles Washington and avenging a two inch loss in the long jump. Washington went 20-2 to Johnson's 20-0. Washington also won the 400 (52.3)

Thrower Alex Ball of Handley won both the shot and discus. He threw 49-2 in the shot and an impressive 153-0 personal best. James Wood's JT Painter took both hurdles, winning the 110 highs in 15.6 and the intermediates in 41.6.
