Judges Classic: Varsity Girls

Runner Anna Cote Races Into Third
by McKenzie Lipscomb

KERNSTOWN BATTLEFIELD—September 10 - John Handley High School hosted their Judges Classic, in which twelve schools from the district came to compete in the Varsity and Junior Varsity Cross Country race.

Around 11:00 am, minutes after the Boys’ Junior Varsity race, the Varsity Girls lined up at the start and were off at the shot of the gun. Nineteen minutes later the first girl, Millbrook’s Jillian Pollack, reach the finish. Just after her by less then a minute was Strasburg’s Nina Pfieffer, and on her heels Handley’s Anna Cote. Cote placed third in the race, her time a total of 20:23.02.

Afterwards, back under the Handley Runners’ tent, Cote smiled and wiped the sweat from her face. When asked to compare the race to the previous one from last week, Cote replied, “This was a much bigger deal. It was our first real race. It was pretty quick.” She laughed, still exhausted from the run. “I felt pretty good. The hills were tough but summer running paid off.”

“I kind of just ran my own race,” Cote shrugged. “I’m not used to running without her…” She referred to senior Handley runner Erin Bender whom had not participated in the activities on the account of a minor flu. Bender and Cote embraced and exchanged words about the race; Bender congratulated her fellow student on her achievement as third overall.  Anna will race again on Saturday for Handley at the James Wood Invitational hosted by James Wood High School.
