Relay-For-Mike
Run/Walk-A-Thon Fundraiser
August 1, 2008
7:00 PM to 7:00 AM
John Handley High School

July 22, 2008 -  You may know Coach McKiernan as the girls coach at Handley High School; you may know him as a teacher or even a friend.  One thing everyone will agree on, is Mike McKiernan is one of the nicest people you will ever meet.   He is also on the waiting list for a heart transplant.

Several of Coach McKiernan's former athletes have organized the Relay-For-Mike 12 hour run/walk-a-thon at the John Handley HS track on August 1, 2008 from 7:00 PM to 7:00 AM.  All proceeds will help ease the medical expenses associated with his heart transplant and subsequent recovery.  These expenses are expected to be very costly.

In an email sent to the running community, Mark Stickley said "Mike has been a huge inspiration to many kids both in cross country and in the classroom, and a tremendous proponent of running".  We at NWDistrict.com couldn't agree more, and we are hoping that you will help raise money for a great cause.

Who can participate in the Relay-For-Mike Fundraiser?  EVERYONE!  Students, athletes, parents, friends, teams or individuals can participate.  The organizers hope to keep people moving around the Handley HS track for twelve continuous hours.  You can run or walk, so you don't have to be an athlete to participate!

Can we sign up as a team? Yes! While the Relay-For-Mike run/walk-a-thon is open to individuals, you can sign up as a team as well. Team themes and/or costumes are encouraged!  The requested starting donation is $30.00 for individuals, or $25.00 for team members.

What if I can't participate due to a prior commitment?  You can still help by sponsoring someone, or even making a donation straight to the Relay-For-Mike fund - you can make checks payable to John Handley High School - attention Heart-a-thon.  Just note somewhere on it that you will not be on the track.  We currently have people who will be participating at "satellite locations" including North Carolina, Florida, Texas and California. Click here for more information.

We are also accepting separate donations from businesses.  For more information, send us an email.

Feel free to tell as many people as you know about it!The more people that know about it, the better it will be!

You do not need to be there right at the start, or from start to finish.  If possible, try and come during off hours (centered around 12-5 AM), as we are pretty sure these will be the slowest and hardest to fill.  If you want to give us an idea of when you are coming, you are welcome; however, it is not necessary.

You do not need to make the donation by yourself.  In fact, we encourage you to ask others to help you out with it, or even to participate themselves!

We prefer that you mail or email your registration form back, even if you bring donations the day of the event (we would like to get an idea of how many people will be attending).  However, if you need to, you may also bring everything the day of.

Members may be added to your team at any time.  Again, we prefer that you let us know ahead of time, but same-day is fine as well!

There will be event t-shirts.  Some volunteers will be "modeling" them during the Heart-a-thon, and we will take orders that day and mail shirts to you as they are made.  More information on cost at a later date.

How do register?  Click here to download the Relay-For-Mike Registration Form.

Group AA State
Championship
Results

May 31, 2008 - The Group AA State Championship Performance has concluded, and we have great news! Several athletes from the Northwestern District are Group AA State Champions!  Click here to view complete results.

Region II Championship
Summary

May 21, 2008, Leesburg, VA - The Region II Championships concluded today at Heritage High School, with a number of notable performances from athletes in the Northwestern District.  The Region II Championships aren't always a benchmark for how things will likely turn out at the State Championship.  This is because many athletes who have already qualified for state competition for
certain events may not compete in those events at the Region Championship.  That being said, the Northwestern District was well represented.  Click here to read the rest of the Region II Championship Summary.

Millbrook Invitational Coverage

May 9, 2008, Winchester, VA - Winchester, Virginia - On Friday May 9th 2008 Millbrook held the Last Chance Invitational where teams from all over the district competed for their final shot to enter districts. Once again, the looming weather threatened the meet, but thankfully it held off.  Millbrook, Handley, James Wood, Warren County, Skyline, and Sherando all represented the Northwestern District. Although Heritage High School stole the meet in the girls division, Sherando placed second with 61.5 points and Millbrook coming in at fourth with 46 points. However in the boys division the tides were turned when Millbrook tied for first with Turner Ashby High School with 93 points and Sherando coming in third with 62 points.
