August 22, 2005 - Cross Country season is about to start! Everyone
is practicing, and preparing for what promises to be an exciting
Cross Country season. We at NWDistrict.com are especially excited
to be a part of the Northwestern District Cross Country season, as
we begin our first year of coverage to a district that is
historically been a powerhouse in Virginia’s Group AA high school
Cross Country.
As we enter the 2005 season, Brentsville High
School’s boys and girls teams are clearly the teams to beat.
Brentsville’s girls are lead by Junior Becky Stewart, who placed
fifth in the 2004 Group AA CC State Championships. Julia Mitchell,
Alex Kulifay and Amilia
Emerson will provide Brentsville with depth that will make them
difficult to beat.
While the Brentsville boys have lost the
talented Pat Eggleston, they still have a highly talented team that
is lead by Nick Gehlsen, who placed fourth in the 2004 Group AA
Cross Country State meet. Gehlsen is followed by Henry Melius, Adam
Henken, and Ray Delgado.
Central High School is a newcomer to the
Northwestern District. The Central girls are lead by Katee Knupp and
Christina Eckard. We at NWDistrict.com want to welcome them to the
district, and look forward to covering their team!
Senior’s Stephanie Shenk and Jacob Pattyson,
return for their final high school cross country season for James
Wood.
Erin Bender tops the list of girls returning
at John Handley, however, there is quite a buzz and a lot of
optimism that surrounds a large roster for the boys and girls on the
Judges team. We look forward to covering the new talent they have
recruited! Junior Deanna Andrews anchors the Liberty girls team,
with Stephanie Giunta right behind her.
The Liberty boys are likely to be lead by Greg Carroll, closely
followed by Evan Ashby.
Millbrook’s Jillian Pollock returns for her
Junior year, and promises to be a contender at the Group AA State
Championships. Sherando has Levi Watson and Ryan Witt returning to
anchor the Warriors team.
With the core group of runners from last years squad returning to
compete this year, the Lady Warren County Wildcats look to improve
their District record and fight for that all important Regional
Qualifying spot. Top returnees Christin Shenfish, Chelsea Williams,
Rita Burrill, Natasha Olson, Kasey Ewing, Kristin Ezzell, Alexia
Hammond, and a much improved Jenny Nichols, will be joined by
numerous freshmen, transfers, and first year runners.
Graduating only 1 varsity runner last year will
certainly be a positive for the Warren County boys heading into the
2005 season. Seniors Philip Morris and James Hall are back for their
second year. The experience they gained from the previous year will
make them stronger runners in the year ahead. Juniors Daniel Arnold
and Chris Grigsby have come out of their shell since 2004 and are
running possessed.
The
Northwestern District has a lot of talent at the state level, with
numerous athletes who have previously place in the top twenty at the
Group AA State Championships. Nothing can be taken for granted
either. Each year, up-and-coming talent improves their performance,
and quite often bump athletes who placed in the top ten the prior
year. Who are the up-and-comers? Which top twenty athletes will
rise to the challenge, and improve their performances? That is what
we at NWDistrict.com look forward to covering in the 2005 Cross
Country season. We hope you’ll book mark our site, and follow all
of the great action!
